Festival of Light

It seems like almost every week something is happening in the Old City. The Festival of Light, a celebration of sight and sound, provided an artistic dimension to the Old City’s evening this past week. We were anxious to see what this was all about so we went with the other service couples, professors and their wives Tuesday evening. The Festival of Light is for everyone. Families and visitors from all around the world come to view the light show. It was an absolutely perfect evening to be out walking (70's with a slight breeze) and a fun way to see the Old City at night.

Through the use of technology, the stone walls (in different locations) offered a screen for images which were projected with music and videos. Many projectors, video players, computers and 14 loudspeakers were placed throughout the city to make the show a one-of-a-kind experience. Photo: We followed an illuminated path to various locations. Located near the Jaffa Gate, the Citadel is known as the historical entrance to the city and a symbol of Old Jerusalem for generations. The stone walls served as the stage for one of the shows. Amidst the archaeological remains in the Citadel’s courtyard, the story of Jerusalem unfolded through giant video images and broadcast music.

It was a perfect evening and after viewing 26 light displays and it was nearly 10 PM, we were ready to head back home. One more day and another new experience in Jerusalem!

  1. This is a great event each year. Our favorite display was done at Damascus Gate the last year we were there. Also, be sure on some free Monday to take a tour of the Hurva Synagogue. That's the only day they give tours. And find a date on a Tuesday or Thursday between 10 and noon to go to the gold domed Russian orthodox church the Mount of Olives for a tour. Some of these places are hard to see if you don't plan well in advance.
